The Scottish inventor Alexander Bean worked on a chemical mechanical facial machine and in 1846 succeeded in reducing graphic characters in laboratory experiments. Frederick Beckwell made many improvements to Bains' design and presented his instrument at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London. The Ben and Backwells systems are inferior and can only produce R-quality images. They do not have synchronization between the transmission engine and the receiver engine. In 1861, the Italian physicist Giovanni Caselli invented the first practical and commercially operated electromechanical fax, the pantograph. In 1881, the British inventor Shelford Doyle created the scanning portgraph, the first fax machine capable of digitizing two-dimensional speech, eliminating the need for manual writing or drawing. Around 1900, the German physicist Arthur Korn invented the telegraph, which was widely used in continental Europe, primarily in 1908 with the delivery of his famous research program from Paris to London.
